Comprehensive Drainage & Landscape Restoration in Ellicott City, MD

Some projects require more than a single solution. This Ellicott City homeowner had been dealing with multiple drainage issues that were causing erosion throughout the property, while several landscape beds had begun to wash out and lose their clean, finished appearance. Rather than simply addressing one isolated problem, we designed a comprehensive improvement plan that restored both the function and beauty of the entire landscape.

The heart of this project was a complete drainage system upgrade. The property already had multiple underground drainage lines, but they discharged independently and were no longer managing stormwater effectively. Our crew connected all three existing drainage lines into one unified underground system before extending approximately 30 feet away from the home to safely discharge water through a pop-up emitter. The emitter was surrounded with decorative 2–5 inch tan river rock, creating an attractive finish while helping disperse water naturally into the surrounding lawn.

To further enhance the area, we installed Clethra alnifolia shrubs around the drainage outlet. These native, moisture-tolerant shrubs not only soften the appearance of the drainage system but also thrive in areas that periodically receive additional moisture, making them both a functional and attractive planting choice.

Beyond the drainage improvements, the landscape itself received a complete refresh. Over time, several planting beds had experienced erosion and mulch washout caused by heavy rains. We restored these areas by weeding, redefining bed edges, applying fresh premium black dyed mulch, and rebuilding the landscape beds to create a clean, uniform appearance throughout the property.

As part of the project, our crew also carefully trimmed the property's foundation shrubs and boxwoods to restore their shape and improve the home's curb appeal. During the project, an overgrown hedge along the side of the property was removed and the remaining stumps were excavated, opening the space and improving the overall appearance of the landscape.

Water from this property had also been affecting a neighboring lawn. To restore the disturbed area, we added screened topsoil, premium grass seed, and straw, helping establish new turf and stabilize the soil for healthy regrowth.

What makes this project unique is how every improvement works together. The upgraded drainage system now protects the landscape from future erosion, the refreshed planting beds restore the property's curb appeal, and the new plantings create a finished appearance that blends the drainage improvements seamlessly into the surrounding landscape. Rather than simply fixing a drainage problem, this project delivered a complete outdoor restoration designed to perform beautifully for years to come.
